‘Season 1 draw’ LG, Samsung tie 2-2 after 12 extra innings of futility

The LG Twins and Samsung Lions played to a scoreless tie in 12 extra innings. It was the first tie in the KBO League this season.

LG and Samsung played to a 2-2 tie on Sunday at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul (18,041 fans) in their second meeting of the 2024 Shinhan Bank SOL Bank KBO League season.

The draw brings LG’s record to 2-1-1 on the season after a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Samsung the previous day (Nov. 26). Samsung, on the other hand, lost the previous day after winning two straight to open the season.

It was the most innings and longest game of the season (4 hours and 12 minutes). LG struck first in the top of the first inning against Samsung starter Won Tae-in. Park Hae-min led off with a single down the right field line and moved to second on Hong Chang-ki’s grounder to second base. Kim Hyun-soo followed with a double to right-center field, scoring Park from second (1-0).

Samsung’s leadoff hitter Ryu Ji-hyuk collided with LG’s Oh Ji-hwan while attempting to steal second base after a walk in the top of the second inning and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance with a shoulder injury. “As a result of an MRI examination, partial damage to the labrum of the left shoulder joint is suspected,” a Samsung official said.

Samsung tied the game in the top of the third inning. Kim Sung-yoon led off with a single and stole second after LG’s Oh Ji-hwan reached on a throwing error. Kim then advanced to third on a grounder to second by Koo Ja-uk and scored on a grounder to shortstop by McKinnon (1-1).

With momentum on their side, Samsung turned the game around in the top of the fifth inning. One out later, Kim Ji-chan drew a leadoff walk against LG starter Choi Won-tae and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Sung-yoon. The next batter, Koo Ja-uk, drew a walk. McKinnon followed with a single to left to make it a 2-1 game. Choi Won-tae then turned the mound over to Lee Ji-gang. Choi finished the day with 4⅔ innings pitched, three hits, three walks, five strikeouts, and two runs (one earned).

LG tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Won Tae-in gave way to Kim Tae-hoon after five innings (92 pitches) of six hits, six walks, two strikeouts and one run (one earned). Oh led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on Moon Bo-kyung’s grounder to 토토 second. Park Dong-won followed with a grounder to second, but Moon Sung-joo hit a single to right-center to tie the game at 2-2.

The game eventually went into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning, LG’s Shin Min-jae drew a walk against Samsung pitcher Lee Sang-min with one out. Park Hae-min flied out to left field, but Hong Chang-ki followed with a single to center. However, Kim Hyun-soo flied out to center field to end the inning.

Samsung put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the 12th after Kim Sung-yoon walked on a strikeout and then Koo Ja-uk singled up the middle, but McKinnon grounded into a double play in front of the third baseman. LG had another chance in the bottom of the 12th. Leadoff hitter Austin struck out against reliever Choi Ha-neul, but Oh Ji-hwan followed with a single to right. He then stole second, and Koo Bon-hyuk drew a walk. Runners on first and second with one out. Park Dong-won stepped up to the plate. However, on the play, the runner at second, Oh Ji-hwan, was caught in a rundown and thrown out. Two outs. Park Dong-won drew a walk. With runners on first and second, Moon Sung-joo struck out swinging after a nine-pitch at-bat, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Meanwhile, Samsung will start Seung-min Lee on the 28th and LG will start Joo-young Son.
